Virtal - The witch

2016-04-13

This music is a part of a collaboration project with Ekaterina Zaikina (painting) and Sergey Arkhipenko (poetry). Initially poetry was created by Sergey, then music was written by me and painting was created by Ekaterina - independently using only poetry.

To create this piece I divided a poem into 4 parts and created a scheme, representing atmosphere and feeling of each part, as well as some music ideas in graphical form. There was no graphical representation of Associations section until I finished the piece (only question mark).

I also produced a version where Sergey's poetry, my music and my videos are combined (see above).

Libraries used:

Chris Hein - Bassoon. When working with Chris Hein you can feel overwhelmed with number of parameters that can be controlled with CC. These are often internal parameters of the sound processing algorithm, which allow very fine tuning. On the other hand, you can miss more musical parameters like legato speed. There is transition speed parameter for legato, but it gives unstable and strange sounding results when changed from default value. This is one of the differences from Sample modeling instruments, where you get less parameters, but parameters are closer to music and are more stable.

Native Instruments - String Ensemble. I had problems with steep CC11 curves - there were some sound artifacts and abrupt sound changes. Also I found out that long legato transitions are treated as polyphony in Auto Divisi mode.
